The History of Dyson
The story of Dyson is one of amazing determination, and just a bit of British garden shed genuis. Way back in the late 1970s James Dyson hit upon the idea of using something called "cyclonic separation" to create a vacuum cleaner that would not lose suction during normal operation (i.e. as it filled up with dirt from you vacuuming your home). He had become fed up with the performance of the vaccum cleaner he owned - a Hoover Junior. He found (as many people do) that dust kept clogging the bag and elsewhere in the vacuum cleaner and this caused the hoover to work with reduced suction.
The actual concept of the Dyson cyclones came from an air filter within his already famous Ballbarrow factory. It took much of his (and his wife's) available funds, five long years and many prototypes until Dyson was able to bring the 'G-Force' cleaner to market in 1983.
Building the first Dyson Vacuum Cleaners
Of course, like many other truly disruptive technologies, no UK manufacturer or distributor would touch this "mk1" Dyson vacuum, as they were fully invested in the existing bag vacuum cleaner market. Undeterred, Dyson launched the first Dyson model in Japan through catalogue sales. Available in any a very fetching bright pink, the G-Force went on sale for around the equivalent of £2,000. This first Dyson obtained a measure of recognition via its success in the 1991 International Design Fair prize in Japan.
However, after failing to convince the major vacuum cleaner manufacturers like Hoover of the public appetite for the Dyson vacuum, James Dyson took the bold step and launched his own manufacturing company. June 1993 was the date when he opened his Dyson research centre and factory in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.
Of course, these days Dysons outsell the hoovers and vacuum cleaners of a number of the companies that rejected Dyson's idea and through an obessive focus on quality and functionality (i.e. how well the products work) Dyson has become a market leader in the UK.
Global domination was next on the cards, and by 2005 Dyson cleaners had become the market leaders in the United States by value. Meanwhile, the Dyson Dual Cyclone became the fastest selling UK-manufactuered vacuum cleaner in history!
Dyson Dual Cyclone meets Dyson Root Cyclone
Dyson and his engineers were able to boost the suction of the Dyson vacuum cleaner by around 45% more suction (which helped it remove more dust) by dividing the air into 8 smaller cyclones. This innovative concept was labelled the Dyson Root Cyclone and replaced the Dyson Dual Cyclone.
Dyson's big break in the UK came about via the memorable "say goodbye to the bag" TV advertising campaign which educated the public as to the key difference betwen a Dyson and other brands of vacuum cleaner (from a total cost of ownership perspective). Thie Dyson did not require the continuing purchase of replacement bags. When the Dyson TV adverts ran, the UK market for disposable cleaner bags was around £100 million anually.
New Dyson Models
In 2005, Dyson added the wheel ball from his Ballbarrow concept into a vacuum cleaner, creating the Dyson Ball, claiming it to be more manoeuvrable.
Most recently, Dyson has launched a range of pet vacuum cleaners, aimed at the millions of households who keep domestic animals. The Dyson Animal vacuums are available across the range, and are helping to ensure that Dyson vacuums continue to be at the forefront of the market both in terms of performance and innovation.
